This interesting monograph presents the only published study on the unique geological features known as yonis, or vulva forms. These natural features (some of which were enhanced) functioned in female fertility ceremonies in Southern California among the Kumeyaay and neighboring groups, stretching from Riverside County to northern Baja California. The author presents both culture-specific and cross-cultural ethnographic information to explain the functioning of the stones.
